Without further ado, let’s take a look at the top transfer news, rumours and updates that made headlines on 14 May 2019.
Patrice Evra expects to see a clear-out sale at Manchester United in the summer
Patrice Evra is undoubtedly one of the most respected and adored individuals to have donned the Manchester United kit in recent times. A fan-favourite at Old Trafford, Evra has been seen supporting his former team with a lot of heart and has been left dispirited by the recent goings-on at the club.
Evra expressed his displeasure at the fans booing Paul Pogba following United’s defeat at the hands of Cardiff City on the last day of the 2018-19 Premier League season, in a chat with Sky Sports’ Gary Neville. The former French international said that he expects Paul Pogba to be part of the mass exodus that will happen at Manchester United this summer.
Evra said,
Pogba has been heavily linked with Real Madrid as of late. His lacklustre performances towards the end of the season weren’t well received by the fans as they constantly lamented his apparent lack of commitment to the cause.
Mesut Ozil doesn’t think he will leave Arsenal in the summer
Despite being used only sparingly under Unai Emery, German international and playmaker Mesut Ozil does not think he will move elsewhere in the summer. Ozil has had quite an ordinary season and is widely tipped to leave the club in the summer.
However, he has now rubbished such claims.
Ozil takes up a major chunk of Arsenal’s wage budget and given his diminishing returns at the club, the latest comments from the German comes as a bit of a surprise.
Despite Ozil’s comments, Unai Emery is expected to go into the transfer window looking for a top midfielder who can seriously bolster their chances across all tournaments next season.
He also talked about why he thinks he deserves to kick on at the Emirates.
Riyad Mahrez will stay at Manchester City
Just a few weeks back, we were met with an array of reports linking Mahrez with an exit from Manchester City over a lack of game time after being sidelined by Pep Guardiola. However, having just wrapped up his first season with the league title at the Etihad, Mahrez has revealed that he wants to kick on at Manchester City.
Mahrez said that he understands the difficulties of integrating himself to an already well-settled team and insisted that he is happy at City.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer demands the signing of Bruno Fernandes
If there’s one big team in Europe that’s looking at this upcoming summer transfer window with a significant amount of hope, that’s Manchester United. The Red Devils are in need of reinforcements all over the pitch if they’re to even have a chance of fighting for the UEFA Champions League in the 2020-21 season.
Bruno Fernandes is among the names that have been widely linked with Manchester United. The Sporting Lisbon midfielder lit up the league with some spectacular performances. His consistency has made him one of the most sought-after midfielders in Europe. Fernandes has 28 goals and 13 assists to his name from central midfield.
Manchester United will have to wait till May 25 for the Portuguese Cup Final to get over before making an official move. Latest reports are claiming that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer demands the signing of the midfielder and has urged the United top brass to seal the deal.
Matthijs De Ligt chooses Barcelona over Real Madrid
With both Spanish giants, Real Madrid and Barcelona expected to undergo massive squad overhauls in the summer, they are expected to battle it out for a few players in the common areas that both teams need strengthening. The most prominent name on that list is that of Ajax captain Matthijs De Ligt’s.
With Nacho Fernandez looking unreliable and Raphael Varane’s intentions unclear, the Blancos are in desperate need of a quality centre-back. Barcelona, on the other hand, want to sell Samuel Umtiti and with Thomas Vermaelen also expected to leave in the summer, the Cules are expected to go all out in their pursuit of the Ajax centre-back.
However, De Ligt has already met with Barcelona’s core set of representatives and wants to go to the Camp Nou in the summer. All that Bartomeu now needs to do is to show up and put the money on the table. The report also claims that De Ligt has reached an agreement with Barcelona over the numbers on his contract.
